Playing God (2008)

Alan Berliner

Playing God is a 7-channel interactive video installation that plays with the story of creation as told in the Book of Genesis. Visitors to the installation can press the slot machine buttons located on a podium to generate a random haiku composed of words from the Book of Genesis. When a visitor gets a winning haiku, videos of creation and about humans "playing god" are displayed across the 7 flat screen displays.

The installation was commissioned by the Contemporary Jewish Museum for its show In The Beginning: Artists Respond to Genesis on the occasion of its reopening in the central museum district of San Francisco. The custom software for Playing God was created in the C++ programming language using the OpenFrameworks library.
